Title: River Police in a skiff near Tower Bridge.
Description: The first organised police unit to patrol the Thames was The Marine Police Force, which was formed in 1798. It owed its existence to Patrick Colquhoun, a magistrate, and John Harriot, a master mariner, who both wanted to combat theft, looting and corruption among the wharves and quays of maritime London. In 1839, the force amalgamated with the newly formed Metropolitan Police, becoming the Thames Division, a name it kept until 2001 when it was re-named The Marine Support Unit.
