Title: Mrs Fry visiting a female prisoner at Newgate.
Description: Elizabeth Gurney Fry (1780-1845) was a famous Quaker prison reformer. Her earliest work was with the women prisoners of Newgate, a place she had first visited as a very young woman. In 1817 she formed an association for the improvement of gaol conditions for women. Throughout her life she travelled around Britain and Europe, visiting places of confinement and campaigning for reforms. In 2002 she was commemorated in a new design for the five-pound note.
