Title: Sir Cloudisly Shovel in the Association...
Description: The full title of this engraving is 'Sir Cloudisly Shovel in the 'Association' with the 'Eagle', 'Rumney' and the 'Firebrand', lost on the Rocks of Scilly, October 22, 1707'. The loss of Shovel's fleet was a major disaster and highlighted the pressing need for an accurate method of calculating longitude. Such a development would prevent the loss of shipping through fundamental errors of navigation.
