Title: Naval pensioners in the grounds of Greenwich Hospital.
Description: Naval pensioners in the grounds of the Royal Hospital for Seamen in Greenwich. The Queen's House and the Royal Observatory are in the background. Seamen contributed sixpence a month from their pay towards the maintenance of the Hospital. Families of pensioners were not allowed to live with them in the hospital so many lived in the Greenwich area. By the 1860s it was found preferable to pay out-pensions and in 1869 the hospital closed.
