Description: Many Asian and African seamen arriving in London in the nineteenth century would have had some basic knowledge of Portuguese. The sign at the Home for Seamen was in Portuguese and a number of Asian languages including Hindi, Arabic, Chinese,Tamil, Bengali and Urdu.
