Description: A technician stands next to the cable laying machinery on the deck of the 'Great Eastern'. Over 500 men were on board the vessel when she set off from Foilhummerum Bay on 25 July 1865. The chief engineer, in charge of cable laying, was Samuel Canning. He was assisted by Henry Clifford.
