Description: The Long Room of the Custom House in the City of London, c. 1901. This was the main public office of the Customs Service, where officials processed all paperwork regarding customs duties payable on cargoes. Thomas Ripley's Custom House of 1717-25 contained the first Long Room, and it was recreated in the new Custom House, built by David Laing and rebuilt by Robert Smirke in the 19th century. This photograph appeared in 'Living London' (1901), edited by George R Sims.
