Description: The transatlantic cable would be the world's longest underwater telegraph cable, extending a distance of over 2000 miles between Newfoundland and Ireland. The location of the cable, from Newfoundland to Ireland, was chosen because surveys revealed that the ocean floor was a plateau between those points. This chart shows the track of the 'Great Eastern' on her voyage from Valentia to Newfoundland.
