Description: An 'Illustrated London News' engraving of the construction of Bazalgette's Northern Outfall Sewer across the Plaistow Marshes in 1861. This carried the entire sewage of north London from the Abbey Mills pumping station to Beckton, where the sewage was discharged into the Thames. Bazalgette's sewers were one of the largest public works programmes in Victorian London.
