Description: The launch of the 'Great Eastern' on 3 November 1857 was a public relations disaster. The highly public death of one of the winch operators caused chaos amongst the 3000 strong crowd of onlookers. To make matters worse, the ship had hardly moved, having stuck fast on the iron slipway.
