Repro ID: BHC2763
Title: Henry VIII (1491-1547).
Description: A half-length full face portrait of Henry VIII in a gold doublet, embroidered and slashed, a black bejewelled hat with a white feather and jewels, and a red coat with fur trimming. Around his neck, he wears a pendant depicting George and the dragon - a nationalistic motif. The king is shown with a shaven head and beard, innovations he adopted in May 1535 in imitation of Francis I of France. The careful and elaborate painting of the gemmed costume and jewellery underscores Henry's passions for such ornaments, and demonstrates Henry's status and power.
Creator: Studio of Hans Holbein
Date: c. 1535
