Description: Discharging deals, battens and boards from the SS 'Portos' at Russia Dock, Rotherhithe. Deal was a softwood timber that was imported to the Surrey Docks. The wooden planks were carried to storage sheds and timber piles by the deal porters, a highly skilled and physically fit group of dock workers.
