Description: St Alfege had been appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1005. In 1012 he had bravely refused to sanction a ransom for his release from captivity by the invading Danes, and was murdered by them in Greenwich. Soon afterwards a church was built on the site. This was rebuilt in the 13th century. After a destructive storm in 1710, Nicholas Hawksmoor rebuilt the church, which remains today.
