Description: Haden was a surgeon by profession, but also a notable etcher in the 19th century. By 1858-59, Haden's brother-in-law, the noted artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an inspiring force. Haden initially took up etching for relaxation in 1843, but the images he produced after 1858 were to make a significant contribution to the revival of etching in England. After 1880 Haden produced a considerable number of mezzotints, some of which included an element of etching. These are among the best examples of this medium during the 19th century. He conformed to the old ideals, and is known for his sound style rather than for his individuality. Haden collected the work of Rembrandt and pioneered modern criticism of his work. He was the first President of the Society of Painter-Etchers.
