Description: James Anderson (1824-93) was captain of the 'Great Eastern' during the laying of the transatlantic cable in 1866. He had worked for the Cunard company for several years before being released to command the 'Great Eastern'. He was later knighted for his role in laying the Atlantic telegraph cable.
