Description: The palace of Greenwich, rebuilt from about 1500 onwards by Henry VII and continued by Henry VIII, was demolished over a period from about 1670 to 1696. It stood on the site of 'Placentia', the pre-Tudor palace of the 15th century, where Henry VIII was born, and was itself the birthplace of Mary I (1516) and Elizabeth I (1533). It was a principal royal residence throughout its existence. |
