Description: St Alfege's, the parish church of Greenwich, was built on the traditional site of the martyrdom of St Alfege (the Archbishop of Canterbury, killed by Vikings in 1012). This is the third church to stand here. Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and completed in 1718, it was one of Queen Anne's so-called 'fifty churches'. Major General James Wolfe, victor of Quebec (1759) is buried here, as are John Julius Angestein, founder of the National Gallery (1883). Thomas Tallis, composer and organist (1585), was buried in the previous church on this site. |
