Description: The Mercers' Company is one of the oldest of the City Livery Companies. It originally comprised merchants, particularly textile merchants. On the obverse side of this silver commemoration medal is St Louis, crowned and standing with staff and sceptre. The accompanying legend reads 'SALVTIS SPEM COFIRMABIT' (sic). On the reverse side (shown above) there is a starboard broadside view of a three-masted vessel with sails furled. The legend reads 'QVI . NAVEM . RECTE . DVXERIT. Exergue: 1588'.
