Now called Mumbai. A natural harbour originally dotted with islands, known to its inhabitants as Mumba Devi and later known to the Portuguese as Mumbaim or Bom Bahia.

In 1661 Bombay was ceded to England as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza when she married Charles II of England. The English East India Company rented Bombay from Charles II.

Today Mumbai is the financial centre for India.
