Description: Deptford Pumping Station, built in 1865. This was an important element in Bazalgette's great scheme for removing London's sewage. Sewage from South London was raised 18 feet, from where it could then flow down the Southern Outfall Sewer to the treatment plant at Crossness. Deptford was the South London equivalent of Abbey Mills in West Ham. The pumping station building is in an attractive Italianate style.
