George Adams

George Adams

Name:  George Adams

Age:  79

Place of birth:  East London

Job on the river:  George started work aged 15 as an apprentice lighterman. After six years learning his trade he was given a licence granting him freedom of the river. He later worked as a stevedore, instructor and docker before retiring in 1989.

Strongest memory:  George's first day as a lighterman began at 6am on the tugs at Brunswick Pier, Blackwall. After a year he moved to barges to gain more experience. On completing his period of training he was verbally examined at Watermen's Hall. Once granted a licence, George could work the river alone.
