Ron Webb

Ron Webb

Name:  Ron Webb

Place of birth:  East London

Job on the river:  Ron started working as a docker in the East India Dock in 1950

Strongest memory:  Ron was involved in an industrial dispute over how much overtime the dockers should do. During the strike he was elected to represent the men from the West India and Millwall Docks on the national strike committee. He also opposed attempts by the employers to convince the dockers that asbestos was safe.

Feelings about dock closure and regeneration:  The changes in docklands in recent years have eroded the community spirit and solidarity that was once such a strong feature of life in the maritime districts of East London. Ron also feels that the river should be used more for the transportation of goods.
