Alex Edgar

Alex Edgar

Name:  Alex Edgar

Age:  78

Place of birth:  London

Job on the river:  Alex worked as a post boy at Manhattan Wharf in Silvertown after leaving school aged 14. He later became a docker at the Royal Docks.

Strongest memory:  While working for the Shaw Savill line at the Royal Docks, he and eleven other men had to share one bucket to wash in after handling dirty cargoes.

Feelings about dock closure and regeneration:  Alex was a docker when fork-lift trucks were introduced. He became one of the first dockers to drive one.
