Title: Longitudinal profile of the Great Eastern. Description: The hull of the 'Great Eastern' was double-skinned, a fact that saved the ship in 1862 when an unmarked reef off Montauk, New York, tore a huge gash in the outer hull. Over 30,000 plates, weighing a third of a ton each, were used to construct her enormous hull.
