Description: During the Second World War, Bermondsey was the most heavily bombed place in Britain. The docks, warehouses, factories, railways and its proximity to central London meant that the local population were in the firing line. Stainer Street Arch near London Bridge Station was being used as an air raid shelter when it was hit by bombing in February 1941. Sixty-eight people died.
