| Description: The full title of this print is 'Westminster Bridge, showing a crane landing stores from a barge for use in building the Embankment'. This tranquil scene was soon to be transformed, as thousands of workmen embarked on one of London's biggest public works programmes of the 19th century. The Embankment was a giant land reclamation project on the north bank of the Thames west of the City. Sections of the Metropolitan Railway and Bazalgette's main sewers were also concealed beneath the Embankment. |
