| Description: The boiler shop of the Penn and Son Works at Deptford Pier, c. 1863. The John Penn marine engine factory opened in 1799, with its first marine steam engine being built in 1825. Under his son the factory became world famous, with works at Greenwich and Deptford. The firm made engines for many ground-breaking ships, and other important works include the first ever wind tunnel and steam-driven cars. The factory employed 800 skilled workmen, and closed for business in 1911. |
