| Description: Tests in 1858 showed that no existing weapon could penetrate the 4.5 inch armour plating that was used to cover HMS 'Warrior'. It resisted the shots of a 68 pounder gun at almost point blank range. The 'Warrior' was launched at the Thames Ironworks in December 1860 and it was not until 1865 that a gun was designed that could penetrate her thick armour. |
