| Description: Outside the Finnish Church in Albion Street, Rotherhithe, c. 1901. Although still part of the Russian Empire until 1917, Finland followed the other Scandinavian countries in founding seamen's churches and institutes for its thousands of seamen visiting foreign ports. The first Finnish Seamen's Church in London was founded in 1881 near the Surrey Commercial Docks, where so many Finnish ships brought timber into the port. Although the Surrey Docks have now gone, the Finnish church - now a modern building from 1958 - still ministers to the Finnish community in London.
