| Description: A docker takes a break at the Surrey Docks. In the background a steamer is moored alongside the timber warehouses. Immediately behind the docker is a pile of timber planks, known as 'deals'. The Surrey Docks were largely devoted to the handling and storage of timber. The sleeping docker may be a deal porter, a docker who specialised in carrying timber. These men were amongst the fittest and most skilled of dockworkers. |
