| Description: The cargo and passenger liner 'Mataura' (1866) was built by the Millwall Steam Ship Company for the short-lived Panama, New Zealand & Australia Royal Mail Company. She had accommodation for some 100 first-class and 60 second-class passengers. Her maiden voyage from London to Sydney commenced on 9 July 1866. She was not a success: in 1868, she was sold to the Ottoman governor of what is now Iraq. Grounded in the Sea of Marmara in 1912, she was finally broken up in 1920. |
