| Description: An Asian quatermaster on the SS 'Kenya' (1951). The 'Kenya' belonged to the British India Line operating between Britain and East Africa. The British India Line was part of P&O, which had a long tradition of employing specific ethnic groups to work on its ships. Typically, Goans would be recruited from their home towns in India to work in the purser's department. Pakistanis would form part of the deck and engine room crews. The quartermaster here may well be from Pakistan. |
