Title: The former Poplar Town Hall.
Description: The former Poplar Town Hall building in Poplar High Street. This is where the Rates Rebellion of 1921 took place. The Poplar councillors, led by George Lansbury, withheld a portion of the rates (local taxes) due to the London County Council in order to increase local welfare payments. They were convicted and spent a time in prison. Mayors of Poplar (merged into the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in 1965) include Will Crooks, George Lansbury, Clement Atlee and WH Lax.
