Title: A Marine Society recruitment advertisement, c. 1905.
Description: A Marine Society advertisement, seeking to recruit boys for the training ship 'Warspite'. Having spent 12 months on board the 'Warspite', the boys would then join either the Royal Navy or Merchant Marine. This picture, used as a magazine advertisement, plays on the considerable 'national efficiency' anxieties that were so prevalent in the first years of the 20th century. It stressed the need to obtain 'British seamen for British ships', as 'the increase of the foreign element' in the Merchant Navy was becoming a 'grave national danger.'
