Title: The Empire Windrush.
Description: The 'Empire Windrush' in 1948. In June of that year, she brought 492 Jamaican immigrants to Tilbury. They were the first of the many Caribbean immigrants seeking to start a new life in Britain. Although few immigrants came through Tilbury, the 'Empire Windrush' has come to symbolise post-war immigration from the Commonwealth.
The 'Empire Windrush' had originally been the 'Monte Rosa' (1930, 14,651 GRT) of the Hamburg - South America Line. Used as a troopship during World War II, she was seized by the British in 1945. In March 1954 she sank off Algeria after an explosion in her engine room.
