| Description: In 1803 several frigates commanded and crewed by Trinity House volunteers blockaded the Thames at Lower Hope as a defence against a threatened French invasion. Frigates had single gun decks which carried from twenty-four to thirty-eight guns. The frigate, a fifth or sixth rate vessel, was not expected to lie in the line of battle but was used for protecting British merchant vessels, capturing enemy merchant vessels and patrols. |
