| Description: During World War II, all the major British shipyards were busy building and repairing larger warships. Thus hundreds of smaller yards were engaged in the building and repair of minor vessels. The Harland and Wolff ship repair yard in North Woolwich was one of many small yards providing landing craft for D-Day and the other amphibious operations in Axis-occupied Europe. This photograph from 1944 shows the 'LCT913' on the stocks. This was a tank landing craft (Mark IV) able to carry up to nine tanks. |
