| Description: The Royal Hospital for Seamen, Greenwich was founded by Queen Mary and William III in 1694 as a refuge for sick and elderly seamen. The buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, were very imposing and impractical for use as a hospital. They were very expensive to run and some say their upkeep became more important than the care of seamen. The hospital closed in 1869. James Holland, the artist, lived in Blackheath near Greenwich in the 1830s. He regularly exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy. |
