Title: The site of the Mile End Waste.
Description: The Mile End Waste on the Mile End Road was once an extensive open space frequently used for meetings. William Booth, later founder of the Salvation Army, preached his first open-air sermon on this spot. The Waste also served as an East End equivalent of Hyde Park, hosting political debates and large-scale strike meetings. The German anarchist Rudolf Rocker addressed joint meetings of striking dockers and Jewish tailors here in 1912.
