Repro ID: BHC1119
Description: From the 16th century Divine Service was held twice daily on board British naval vessels. Many merchant vessels also held services or prayer meetings. The presence of the woman in this painting is unusual. She is likely to have been the wife of one of the marines with whom she is sitting. Women were not usually allowed on naval vessels. This painting by Augustus Earle provides a rare glimpse of life below deck.
