Description: Bombay, with its deep harbour, and easy access to the major sea routes in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf, was acquired by the Company in 1668 as part of the marriage settlement of the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza to Charles II. It gave the Company a far more secure base on the north-west coast of India than its leased factory in Surat and was destined to become an important trading port.
