| Description: The 1865 expedition had gone most of the way to Newfoundland laying the transatlantic cable when tragedy struck. The telegraph cable broke and was lost into the ocean's depths. Repeated efforts were made to grapple the cable, but to no avail. The 'Great Eastern' had to wait for another year before a new attempt could be made. |
