| Description: The ornate interior of the Painted Hall in the old Royal Hospital for Seamen, Greenwich (now the Old Royal Naval College). The artist was James Thornhill, and the paintings represent the triumph of English Protestant succession and maritime power. It was Thornhill's first big commission, and his success here led to his knighthood (the first English painter to receive this honour) and his membership of Parliament. |
