Title: Ancient state of the suburbs of Southwark.
Description: An artists' impression of the Pool of London in the seventeenth century. During this period the city and port of London continued to grow and prosper. The Thames became an important merchant shipbuilding centre and a location for the construction of warships for the Royal Navy. The port was also the base for many trading companies. English merchants, adventurers and explorers left the capital and sailed to the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. London thus became a gateway to the markets and products of the world. In the seventeenth century, 90% of the country's commerce passed through London.
