Description: A caricature of a seaman in the port of London. Most seamen were young and single, and when in port, they flocked to areas like the Ratcliffe Highway in Wapping. They were looking for drink and women, and many establishments provided for their every need. At first, society regarded this as harmless fun. In time, churches and other organisation sought to provide alternative facilities for seamen in port.
