Description: The coast of Northeast Somalia was known as the Aromatic Coast or the Cape of Spices to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Pepper was one of the spices brought to the Northeast coast of Somalia by sailors from Southwest India. In Somalia the spices were bartered for Somali ivory and incense, and Roman glass and olive oil.
