Description: The Portuguese first visited Macao (or Macau) in the early 16th century. In return for clearing the area at the mouth of the Pearl River of pirates the peninsula and two islands (Taipa and Coloane) were ceded to Portugal in 1557. The territory was returned to China in 1999, making it one of the first and last European colonies in Asia.
