Description: The Commercial Road Company, partly representing the East and West India dock companies, constructed the Commercial Road to provide an efficient link between the docks and the City. It ran from the East India Docks to Back Church Lane in Whitechapel. It was later extended to Whitechapel High Street. It allowed goods to be quickly brought into the City from the docks.
