| Description: The firm of Fletcher, Son and Fearnall was one of the oldest on the Thames, having been founded by a Mr Fletcher at Shadwell in the 18th century. The firm moved to Limehouse in 1818, where they set up three graving or dry docks, known collectively as the Union Dock. In 1833 they used the hull of the 1,200 ton East Indiaman 'Canton' as a replacement dry dock. Small ships were repaired inside this hull for many years, until the Lower Dock was built in 1894. The picture shows the 'Canton' being demolished. |
