Description: In 1981, the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) was created and charged with overseeing the world's largest urban regeneration project - the transformation of the derelict port districts. Its task was to bring land and buildings into effective use, encourage the development of existing and new industry, create an attractive environment and ensure that housing and social facilities were made available to encourage people to live and work in the area. Housing and new commercial developments now cover most of the area that once were the London docks and wharves.
